What it is:

Chai Hu, or bupleurum root, is a bitter and slightly cold herb used in TCM to soothe the Liver, relieve Qi stagnation, and harmonize the exterior and interior. It is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Chai Hu is known for its ability to soothe Liver Qi stagnation, alleviate pain, and promote the smooth flow of Qi. It is often used in formulas to treat patterns of Liver Qi stagnation with symptoms such as irritability, chest tightness, and menstrual disorders.
